THE STORY

The theatre lay in ruin for over a decade, neglected and unused. It couldn’t have been more than a week after I’d bought the theatre that I recall standing on the pavement, which would become the new entrance way to the building, saying that soon there would be people standing in that very place saying how much it reminded them of being on Broadway in New York. Low and behold, less than 9 months later, I overheard George Bizos uttering these words verbatim at the theatre’s relaunch. Talk about walking through your imagination…

The Theatre, designed by Manfred Hermer in 1951 in a Scandanavian modernist style, has been meticulously re-vamped. The timber cladding, lighting and all 550 seats have been preserved to as much of the original finish as possible, revealing some unexpected gems, like the black and white vinyl checkered floor that was literally swept under the carpets for all these years. Since it’s re-opening with the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning rock musical RENT, the theatre is now a leading multi-dimensional event venue and hosts events including concerts, award ceremonies, talent shows, exhibitions, weddings and conferences.
